Johnnie and his mum, trapped in a life with a miserable benefactor, turn to a 200-year-old ghost pirate and create a new life on his ship. Captain Will is cursed by The Devil's Son in a way that only allows souls as miserable as he to see him. Can Johnnie, Laura and Will find a way to help each other? Can the curse be lifted and the pirate set free? On an island off the coast of Florida, Johnnie finds himself without friends, without a father to stand by him and without much hope that his mother will ever be happy again. Wandering in exploration, he finds an old rundown ship in the harbour, and in the galley below, the captain himselfąthe cursed soul of Captain Will. Johnnie's mum, Laura, having married the miserable Nathaniel as a means to escape poverty in England, concocts a plan to save Johnnie from being grounded forever. It turns out that her plan can save them all. The old ship is brought back to life, and eventually a new life is formed and an old life is brought to peace.
Every kid loves a good ghost story and adding pirates to the mix is always a good idea. Stevie Smith has begun a writing career that will undoubtedly touch the lives of many children. What better pirate treasure is there than that which can spark the imagination of a child? What better gift to the world than a story that proves that good overcomes evil? No curse is strong enough to conquer love. This author shows promise, and "Johnnie and Will" promises to be a good read.
