William Foster put together a fascinating, suspenseful novel involving greed, conspiracy, and murder. This well-written novel takes you through several big-time business deals while rubbing elbows with affluent people in England, and brings a bit of romance as well. The first chapter sets the books tone with the mysterious murder of Charles LaBurdge. His nephew, Martin LaBurdge, the main character, a resident of Chicago, decides to attend his uncleÆs funeral in Plymouth, England, and settle his uncleÆs estate. Martin asks the bank where he works for funeral leave. Denied, he resigns, then establishes himself as a private consultant, write a contract, and sells, for $800,000.00, a novel computerized method he developed on his own time that can remove fraud from banking transactions. He then goes to Buxton Manor in Plymouth, England, where he meets Sara Jenkins, daughter of Charles LaBurdgeÆs best friend, Robert Jenkins. GailÆs father, Robert, also died mysteriously, one week earlier. Martin felt suspicious about his uncleÆs death. He visits his uncleÆs physician, Dr. Greff, who said Charles, at 72, had been in good heath prior to his death. Martin asks for an autopsy. The autopsy showed that Charles died of cyanide poisoning. Cloth fibers in his lungs showed he was suffocated while dying. Martin makes friends with Sara Jenkins. He asks if there was an autopsy on her father. He tells her that Charles, her fatherÆs closest friend, had been murdered. Sara asks for an autopsy on her father. He died of cyanide poisoning also. Martin and Sara then set about to discover who murdered Robert and Charles and why. The reader is taken on an interesting trail of clues with many surprising twists and turns and danger to themselves until the crimes are unveiled. The author maintains interest with his knowledge of England, banking, fashions, and high-level business deals.
The author has already been featured as a mystery writer on national television and in several publications. This is his first novel. Expect more. He is talented. You will enjoy this novel. ItÆs a story of two people who suffer the murder of loved ones, solve the murders through their own persistence and ingenuity, improve their fortunes through the cleverness of Martin, and begin an affection and respect for each other thatÆs certain to last a lifetime.
