THE HEAT IS ON calls for a backlash to a backlash. It is a wake-up call to a dangerously complacent society. First, Gelbspan describes specific incidents and information that make a compelling, nearly irrefutable case that global warming is HERE NOW. But other books have also accomplished that objective. What Gelbspan also reveals, with a reporter's eye toward connecting every seamy, slimy detail, is the cynical campaign waged by fossil fuel interests to obscure the truth of the situation. Gelbspan precisely details how a small minority of scientists, holding views compatible with coal and oil interests, have been thrust into the limelight, and how the media have elevated their views beyond the scant attention they have received in the conventional, reputable scientific community. In a generation, we may well witness Congressional hearings where coal and oil executives are asked to state when they knew there was a global warming, the way tobacco executives are now being asked to admit when they knew their products cause cancer. If enough people read Gelbspan's book, those energy executives may face the questions sooner.
THE HEAT IS ON is a book that informs, enlightens,
entertains, and infuriates as the facts stack up and we
realize what games are being played by unscrupulous,
greed-driven powerful special interests.
