In the small rural towns of Alabama live a bunch of individuals whose behavior and attitudes are so disgusting, outsiders would question whether they are human. These people, mostly male, live, at best, on the fringe of society. Their world of the woods is under siege as factories encroach, but that only encourages more aberrant behavior. Nine of these short stories are weird, but entertaining. However, the title tale will haunt readers for years to come and begin to earn Tom Franklin a reputation as a scribe of Southern life. On the surface the anthology may appear simple. Instead, due to the skill of Mr. Franklin these harsh tales seem real. Mr. Franklin brings to life a slowly dying segment of sub-society, which may be the last bastion of masculinity outside a rest room.
