  • Henry Baum’s, “North of Sunset” is a must read Hollywood thriller which takes the reader on a roller coaster ride with the main character, a famous yet sexist movie star, Michael Sennet. “In Michael’s life, the defining moment was realizing that all women were attainable.” He even brags that women are the center of his life. Stereotypically, Michael is married to a famous actress, Cheryl Leigh who is somewhat accepting of his weakness to temptation. After all, “Michael gave her a sense of connection to all the great romances, in Hollywood movies and Hollywood lore.” Basically, she was happy with their life as the great Hollywood couple.

Baum’s clever characters move this tale along with swirling madness. Besides the beautiful couple Michael and Cheryl, he introduces a host of developed eccentrics. Every great story about the film industry needs a selfish Jewish producer, a slimy and greedy paparazzi photographer, a depressed novel writing killer aptly named Curt Knudsen, and a movie loving jaded homicide detective.

Envy is at the heart of this story. All readers can relate to the feeling of rage that jealousy and envy can cause in any lifestyle. Curt Knudsen drives along Sunset Boulevard that “snaked around the whole city like a moat” in his crappy Ford comparing this rich area to his poorer L.A. basin neighborhood. “He wanted to live north of Sunset, where everything shined with the blinding pure white light of success.”

I really enjoyed this intelligent thriller as it led me down the various exciting paths to a surprising conclusion.
