  • Deep in the backwoods of Virginia, Maggie Stiefvater (Pronounced Steve-Otter) is a relatively unknown author with great potential. Her book, Lament: The Faerie Queen’s Deception, captivates the reader with its forbidden love story and deep magical ideals. Written in a lyrical form, the story actually takes the reader into the supernatural realms of the fae and shows them a deeper side to the common Irish myths and legends that makes the island’s history so rich.

The main character Deirdre Monaghan is an insightful picture of a “normal” teenager caught up in the everyday woes of life. She is practically invisible to the people at her high school and her best (and only) friend, James, is secretly in love with her causing an unbreakable awkwardness to come between them. The one and only thing she stands out in though is when she plays the harp. Although she has a petrifying fear of performing on stage that causes her to become sick just at the thought of it. This fear is the catalyst that starts the series of chained events that lead Deidre down an unknown and forbidden road of trouble she had never dreamed of getting in to. When the book starts, Deidre is going to play in a state wide competition and her nerves unflatteringly cause her to take a pit stop in the bathroom. That of course is where she meets the quirky and very good looking character, Luke Dillon.

Immediately she begins to take a comfort in this strange almost dreamlike guy who seems to know more information about her than she was ever willing to tell. Little does she know though that Luke has a lot of pretty deadly secrets hidden away himself that Deidre would find unbearable to even hear. He is a lethal fairy assasian of the queens and has no other choice but to serve her even though he doesnt want to. This fact leads the two into the unrequited realm of the fairy’s where the Queen is holding a pretty nasty price over Luke’s head because of it. Only Deirdre, who has fallen deeply in love with Luke, has the power to save him from the evil queen’s clutches…but of course it comes with a very steep price, one that could ultimately cause the sacrifice of someone very dear to her, James. Faced with this decision, readers get a perfect picture of the internal struggle between good and evil that has become very common in popular books of today.

The suspense in this book will keep readers turning the page into the early morning hours eager to know the fate of the two lovers as they discover the hidden world unseen by the normal human eye. The excitement keeps going all the way to the very last page where the final battle for control takes place and Deidre must make her final, possibly fateful decision. It is a great book to read and is guaranteed to make you wonder about the true existence of the supernatural when it’s all over. It holds just the proper amount of quirkiness, suspense, excitement and heartbreak to keep the reader satisfied all the way through and eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.
