In order to understand this particular book review, you need to understand me. Because when it comes to religious or political works, subjects in which people are firmly devout and often difficultly swayed, each reader takes from that work something completely different. I am a practicing Christian of the Episcopal Church, and am in agreement with Aaberg in the readings of Jesus, expounded in Aaberg's new book "Jesus' Last Seminar". "Jesus' Last Seminar" is essentially a study guide in a long list of study guides in the Aaberg library (he previous authored "The Promises of God Study Guide Series"). It is a teaching according to the literal word of the Bible and won't appeal to more liberal interpreter's of the scriptures. Aaberg calls this "the hard truth", and it's important to take note that Aaberg's teachings makes a solid case for it. He presents a detailed historical record that recounts the final days of Jesus and clearly outlines the purpose of Jesus. This may seem elementary, but in a world that is becoming more and more accepting of the idea that Jesus is merely a great teacher rather than the Lord incarnate, Aaberg's message stands on new legs. Unlike his previous book, "Seducing Spirits", which was largely a warning against the worldly temptations that can turn followers away from Jesus, "Last Seminar" has a more hopeful ring to it. Where "Seducing Spirits" made you feel like a spider dangling over the infernos of Hell by a vengeful God, "Last Seminar" offers hope in the name of Jesus Christ. Aaberg says, "The Bible cannot be clearer that you cannot earn your salvation. Salvation is a gift." While this message has become more ignored as the world secularizes, the mere shadow of adversity has made it less taken for granted by true Christians. Aaberg not only outlines the gift itself but what this gift means for those who accept it. All of which is supported by passages in the Bible included in the book for reference.
"Jesus' Last Seminar" is a spectacular book, and used best when in conjunction with Aaberg's other book, "Seducing Spirits". It teaches in minute detail the implications of Jesus' teachings to his disciples, and Aaberg is able to present those teachings to you. This critical analysis of Jesus' final words are the most crucial parts of the Bible to understand, since they form the very foundation on which the spiritual house is built. Aaberg's book is an indispensable tool in considering how we might better live in God's house, and that makes another great addition to your own library.
