Steve Henry is not one to hide his light under a bushel. In The Playbook for Small Businesses he manages to combine football terminology and Christian sensibility with very down-to-earth advice for the aspiring entrepreneur. Henry reminds us that 30,000 businesses fail each month in the United States. Every head in the room would undoubtedly nod in agreement when he goes on to quote Steve Forbes as saying "The number one reason for this demise is lack of bank financing and capital." Every head, that is, but Henry's. He firmly believes--and makes an excellent case for it--that "the root problem is that the owners didn't have that personal relationship with their most treasured asset: their customers." The Playbook sets out a series of stewardship principles, supported by both heart-warming and amusing anecdotal evidence, that describe how these relationships--with his staff as well as customers--are not only the basis of his financial success, but the source of true wealth--a grace-filled way of life.
Steve Henry's business? A used-car dealership. Now, if someone can sell used-cars profitably using Christian principles, the rest of us should be honor-bound to read his book and give it a try.
