Both brilliant and incisive, John Tusa puts before the interested reader a bold manifesto for the future of the beleagured arts. As he asserts, 'the arts matter because they embrace, express and define the soul of a civilisation.' With this firmly in mind he divides his book into 3 sections: a resume of the arts, an examination of the current government's approach to funding and finally a suggested course of action, influenced by his time as managing director of London's Barbican centre.
Tusa nails his colours to the mast unequivocally and his
thoughts are often provocative and timely as well as cogent.
Enthusiasm and knowledge permeate every page and in this
series of well structured arguments Tusa aims to engage
everyone's attention for, as he expressively demonstrates,
the arts constitute the very backbone of a nation.
