Stephen Horn has scored a sensational victory in his first novel "In Her Defense". As a former prosecutor and criminal lawyer, he has used his experience to create a fast paced, can't put it down, very exciting mystery including every human emotion from depression to elation, with a little love in the middle. Frank O'Connell leaves his family, a prestigious law firm and a comfortable future to prove himself worthy to his ex-wife, his ex-father-in-law partner, and to himself. This brings him to the lowest depths of the legal profession, defending any indigent client he can find. Then a miracle happens. Beautiful socialite Ashley Bronson is accused of murder and because of a casual meeting during her arraignment, she chooses him to defend her. The highly publicised case in open and shut against her. The evidence is everwhelming, but O'Connell puts together an unlikely team of has- beens and neophytes and stumbles into a tangled web of lies, corruption and double-dealing that goes back a generation. In spite of his romantic involvement with his client, O'Connell doggedly pursues every lead until he finally determines if she is guilty or not guilty. The startling conclusion is a mystery readers delight as is this whole, very readable, first novel. Mickey Spillane could not have done it better.
