  • How to use the database of reviews

  • OK, I have two confessions to make here. First, this book isn't really self-help in the sense that a psychologist wrote it and it will make you more aware of yourself and improve your life. It's more a reference book, just like the title implies. My second is that I didn't read it. GASP! What kind of a review is this, you say! Well, I'll tell you, it's a darn good on, and I'll tell you why. (Besides, when you pick it up, you'll empathize. It weighs 5 pounds.)

The Encyclopedia of Country Living is unlike any other resource I have seen. It shares some likeness to Laurel's Kitchen cookbook and to The Natural House book in that it gives practical, homey advice for folks anywhere. Sandwiched between tips for raising livestock (chapters 8 - 11) and candle making, quilting, and land buying, etc. (chapter 1) are oodles of information bits on plants and how to use them to fill your stomach. All 850+ pages are worth keeping on your personal bookshelf, especially if you live in rural areas, where this advice is most practical. Being that I plan to do this myself one day, I have already reserved a spot among my most revered books for this encyclopedia.
