"Tales from the Dragon's Cave" was a wonderful read. Author Williams has taken a series of short stories to illustrate how kids can resolve different kinds of conflict. She addresses building self-esteem, communication skills, cooperation, and creating win-win situations. What I liked best is that the stories were easy for kids (age 7 and up) to read and understand how each concept might work and succeed. Williams uses dragons in most of the stories, a creature which some kids find magical, and others frightening. But she describes dragon's personalities well (as legend goes anyway). Here's an excerpt from her section on communication skills: "... dragons must understand that how you say something is perhaps as important as what you say. Are you shouting or mumbling? (Dragons tend to shout.)" She then goes on to use the stories to show how well using better communication skills can work for resolving differences.
If your kids are having a hard time with conflict, either at
home or with friends, pick the book up and have them read
it. They will find it enjoyable and might learn a strategy
or two about how to resolve their own problems.
