Medicine Rock Reflections is part memoir, part nature writing and part environmental commentary. In the late 1960s my parents bought 80 acres in northern Colorado and built a small, primitive cabin. We named the place Medicine Rock and spent the better part of our summers and vacations there, hiking and exploring, riding horses, observing wildlife, finding arrowheads, sitting by the fire, and working. The land was purchased from the rancher who homesteaded in the area during the 1920s and we came to know him and other ranchers in the area before they passed from the scene. Through the course of the time spent there I came to know something about the natural world and my place in it. The idea of 'reflections' is to look back on those days and examine the heritage of my current views and perceptions, including a bit of family history, and how the experiences of that time shaped and continues to shape my outlook today. Medicine Rock didnŝt just grow on me; it grew in me. There was an unmistakable feeling of being a part of the greater whole that was instilled in me at a young age, the roots of which continue to grow deeper in my consciousness with each passing year. Woven within the book is an account of a personal spiritual journey that started in a special place and involves a long-running effort to derive some sense of personal meaning and purpose through the natural world and an effort to establish a deeper understanding of Native American ways of relating to the land.
