One man shares his story of tragic pain and healing hope

Most of us tend to run when faced with life’s tragedies. It is simply too difficult and painful to embrace our problems with acceptance. One man who experienced the heartbreaking deaths of his wife and child learned how to release, how to accept, and how to survive to build a life again.

In FaithQuake: Rebuilding Your Faith After Tragedy Strikes. (Baker Books, January 2003), author and speaker Doug Herman relates truths learned as his own faith was being forged on an anvil of seemingly unbearable events. Herman buried his infant daughter and wife due to AIDS contracted from an infected blood transfusion during labor.

While this disease decimated his homefront, cancer ravaged his brother and grandfather. Herman sought comfort from the church but was abandoned and ostracized by fellow believers. He was left alone, asking God, “Why?”

FaithQuake focuses on the hard questions: “Why me?” “Why won’t God answer me?” “Is God really good?” “Does He heal?” “What if He doesn’t?” Herman discusses theses issues and others with insight and conviction.
